    [[fēi]] [[非]] [[fei]]’wrong’
[[fēi]] [[非]] [[fei]] (not/is not), nominal negation, extended to “is not this”, and so more abstractly “incorrect”, contrasting with shì 是 (this/is this). 【5Q】

[[fēi]] [[非]] [[fei]] (1) ‘not right, wrong, unreasonable,’ the opposite of shì, cf. Xiáoqǔ NO6: ‘make clear the difference between right and wrong’ (míng shì fēi zhī fēn) . (2) ‘oppose, criticise, accuse’, cf. Xiáoqǔ NO11: ‘if you yourself hold a position do not oppose (fēi) someone else who holds it; if you yourself do not hold a position do not demand that someone else holds it. (3) ‘is not, has not’, cf. Xiáoqǔ NO15: ‘killing a robber is not (fēi) killing a person’, Mòjīng A83: ‘not having (fēi) that [cause] there must be no [such result]; it is necessary [i.e. an inevitable correspondence]’.

【YWJ】
