jǔ 举 ju (1) ‘refer, reference’, representational meaning, cf. Xiáoqǔ NO11: ‘use names/objects to represent objects/states-of-affairs’ (yǐ míng jǔ shí), Mòjīng A31 ‘jǔ is to represent objects/state-of-affairs (shí)’, i.e. it is that function of names and concepts. (2) ‘cite, give examples’, cf. Mòjīng A97 ‘When our opponent gives examples (jǔ) of it being so (jǔ) [i.e. positive examples], and concludes that it is so of all [things in the category], we can then give examples of it not being so [i.e. negative examples] to challenge them.’
【YWJ】
